On Day 1 of the second Youth Test of the series at Great Barrier Reef Arena, Mackay, bowlers wreaked havoc as 17 wickets fell. After Australia Under-19 were bowled out for 135 in less than two sessions, their bowlers made early inroads. At Stumps, Day 1, India Under-19 were marginally ahead with a nine-run lead and three wickets in hand.
Aussie batting collapse
Australian captain Will Malajczuk won the toss and opted to bat first. Udhav Mohan struck twice with the new ball and soon Henil Patel and Khilan Patel joined in. Australia lost five wickets for just 32 runs in the 10th over.
Young scores fifty
It was the partnership between wicketkeeper-batter Alex Lee Young and Yash Deshmukh that helped them recover. Lee Young ran out of partners. He scored 66 runs from 108 deliveries, laced with nine fours and a six. The hosts were bowled out for 135 in 43.4 overs. Henil and Khilan took three wickets each.
India batters disappoint too
Vihaan Malhotra walked out to open alongside skipper Mhatre instead of Suryavanshi. Malhotra failed to capitalise and fell to Will Byrom for an 18-ball 11. Two balls pater, Mhatre departed as well. Suryavanshi played a cameo of 14-ball 21, including two fours and a six before becoming Charles Lachmund's only victim of the day.
After showing resistance with the bat, Kasey Barton struck thrice. First, Rahul Kumar got out caught behind. Centurion of the previous game, Vedant Trivedi got off to a decent start but lost his wicket to Barton for a 44-ball 25. Julian Osbourne joined the party with wicketkeeper-batter Harvansh Pangalia's wicket.
Lower order gets nominal lead
India were struggling for 82/6 after 17 overs. Khilan and Henil helped India recover and reduce the deficit. They shared a 48-run partnership. The partnership was broken by Barton with Khilan's wicket. He scored 26 runs from 60 balls. At the end of Day 1's play, India were 144/7 after 40 overs with Henil and Deepesh Devendran batting on 22 and 6 respectively.
On Day 2, the lower order would look to extend the lead over Aussies and put pressure on them. In the previous game, Australia lost by an innings and 58 runs.
