The former Pakistan opener Salman Butt suggested Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to replace Shan Masood with Babar Azam as the captain of the Men's cricket team in all three formats after the Men in Green failed to perform in the T20 World Cup 2024. Current Pakistan skipper Babar faced a lot of criticism after the side got out of the tournament before the Super 8 of the marquee event.
Many cricketing experts suggested Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shadab Khan to be the new captain of Pakistan. Butt made a left-field pick advocating for 32-year-old Shan Masood who is currently the Test captain of Pakistan to lead in all three formats. The former cricketer shared his views on his YouTube Channel. Butt was vocal about the concerns the team is facing over the current leadership’s attitude and miserable tactics poorly executed.
“There is some fuss because of which despite having skill, players haven't been able to execute. There is someone who doesn't have any strategy for planning, but still has a lot of attitude. To silence that attitude, I would definitely make Shan Masood the captain," Butt advised on his YouTube Channel.
Masood was appointed as the Test skipper when Pakistan were failed to perform in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the batter is currently leading Pakistan in the longest format of the game. After Babar left the captaincy of all formats the cricket board made Shaheen Shah Afridi as white-ball captain and Masood to lead in Tests.
After the flop show in the T20 World Cup 2024, Men in Green will play nine Test matches for the 2024-25 season of the World Test Championship. These Tests include home series against Bangladesh and England in August and October, respectively. They will also play away matches in South Africa in December/January and later will play two Tests at home against West Indies in January 2025.
