Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former Indian cricketer Hrishikesh Kanitkar as the head coach of India A team for their upcoming England tour, which is scheduled to start from May 30, as per a TOI report.
The India A team's tour of England will consist of two first-class matches against England Lions in Canterbury and Northampton. Following these encounters against England Lions, the tour will culminate in a final match against the senior Indian men's cricket team.
Hrishikesh Kanitkar to be India A's head coach for England tour
This tour holds significant importance as part of the preparations for the Indian senior team's five-match Test series against England, starting on June 20.
Kanitkar, who represented India in both Test and One Day International matches, also enjoyed a successful domestic career, amassing over 8,000 runs. He now brings his extensive experience to this crucial developmental role within Indian cricket.
Hrishikesh Kanitkar's coaching background includes a stint with the Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the Indian Premier League, alongside his current involvement with the Maharashtra domestic team. Known for his calm demeanor and sharp tactical acumen, Kanitkar has made notable contributions to the nurturing of young talent across all formats of the game. His appointment as the head coach of India A comes at a pivotal time, as India faces the task of rebuilding its Test side following the recent retirements of key players such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
Karun Nair and wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan made surprise entries into the India A squad which will be led by Abhimanyu Easwaran and his deputy Dhruv Jurel. Young talent Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been named in the squad, with Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan set to join the team prior to their second match. Dhruv Jurel has been appointed as the vice-captain for the tour. The squad also features Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shardul Thakur. Notably, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was sidelined from IPL 2025 due to injury, and Sarfaraz Khan have also been included in the touring party.
