Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar had recently criticised foreign cricketers for trying to throw dirt on Indian cricket by giving their harsh opinions. These remarks came after multiple overseas cricketers had criticized BCCI for not choosing Shreyas Iyer in India's 15-member squad for Asia Cup 2025. Gavaskar stated that the selection of the Indian team does not concern any of these cricketers and even told them to not meddle in affairs regarding Indian cricket.
However, former Australia cricketer and current Punjab Kings (PBKS) assistant coach Brad Haddin wasn't a fan of the comments made by Gavaskar and defended overseas cricketers for giving their opinion on Indian cricket. He stated that many of them have worked with Indian players in IPL and thus, are aware of the things going on in Indian cricket.
"I am glad he is listening to the show. We are going worldwide. Our job is to give an opinion on what's topical in world cricket. That's what we do. We coached him (Iyer) in the IPL and I stand by my take. I was shocked that he wasn't in the squad and I am not saying the other players (selected) shouldn't be there. The reason I say that is because just the way he handled our group, he was a great leader and the way he played under pressure, leading from the front. But, yeah, they are obviously going well even with players like him on the sideline," Haddin said on LiSTNR YouTube channel.
Earlier, Gavaskar had slammed overseas cricketers for criticising the BCCI over their selection calls despite having no stake in Indian cricket.
Gavaskar's remark on foreign cricketers
"What is baffling is foreigners who have zero stake in Indian cricket, and much less knowledge about it, wading into the debate and adding fuel to the fire. However great they may be as players and however many times they may have been to India, the selection of the Indian team is strictly none of their business," Gavaskar had written in his column for Sportstar.
Meanwhile, Iyer's omission from the Indian squad for Asia Cup has become one of the most debated topics among both fans and former cricketers in the past few weeks. This is due to the fact that many were expecting the 30-year-old to get picked especially after his stellar campaign with the bat for PBKS in IPL 2025. He had finished as the sixth-highest run-getter of the tournament with 604 runs from 17 matches. Iyer played a massive role in taking the Punjab-based franchise all the way to the final.
