India’s legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has been signed by Sydney Thunder for the upcoming 2025-26 season of the Big Bash League (BBL). Ashwin has become one of the biggest signings in the history of the Australian T20 franchise league. While there were four franchise which approached Ashwin, he was happy with the "crystal clear" communication with Thunder's leadership and is excited to play under the captaincy of David Warner.
“Thunder were crystal clear about how they’d use me and brave enough to back it. My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we’re fully aligned on my role," Ashwin said.
“I love how Dave Warner plays the game, and it’s always better when your leader shares your mindset. I can’t wait to perform for the Thunder Nation.”
Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland said that Ashwin was impressed with the club's performance and wants to leave an impact on their Aussie spinners Tanveer Sangha and Chris Green.
"I think it's arguably the biggest signing in BBL history – first Indian legend and an icon of the game," Copeland said.
"He's a very competitive guy but one of the most impressive things has been before I even mentioned a thing about our club, he said, 'I loved what Sam Billings did for you guys last year as the overseas player. And if I was to play there, I would really want to make sure I leave a positive impact on Tanveer Sangha and Chris Green'."
Indians to play in the BBL
39-year-old Ashwin will become the first high-profile Indian player to play in the BBL. India’s Under-19 World Cup 2012-winning captain Unmukt Chand (Melbourne Renegades), former India domestic cricketer Nikhil Chaudhary (Hobart Hurricanes) are the other two.
Ashwin's availability in BBL
Ashwin has entered the ILT20 auction as well which will go on till January 5. If Ashwin's future ILT20 team makes it to the final, he is likely to play just three BBL games. However, if the circumstances at the BBL turn out to be different, he may play more games in the Australian league.
Ashwin's T20 numbers
Ashwin is India's fifth-highest wicket-takers in T20s (franchise cricket, T20Is and domestic T20s). He has 317 wickets from 333 games at an average of 26.94, including four four-fers.
