Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has been fined 30 per cent of his match fee for his outburst during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 match between Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans on June 8. Ashwin was given out lbw as he attempted to play the sweep shot against R. Sai Kishore. The 38-year-old was not happy with the decision as the ball was pitching outside leg stump. First, he argued with the umpire Venkateshan Krithika and then smashed his pads with the bat. He also threw his gloves as he neared the dugout.
As per a report by Cricbuzz, there was a hearing conducted by match referee Arjan Kripal Singh after Dindigul Dragons' comprehensive nine-wicket defeat. Ashwin was fined 10 per cent for showing dissent towards umpire Krithika who made the controversial lbw call. Further, he was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for abusing the equipment. The Dindigul Dragons captain accepted the sanctions but is yet to make an official comment on the incident at SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore.
A video of Ashwin arguing with the umpire has gone viral on social media. Umpire Krithika paid no heed to Ashwin as he questioned her decision. There was no DRS available and he reluctantly walked back to the dugout. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder was visibly frustrated as he was dismissed for 18 off 11 balls. His knock featured two fours and a six.
Big loss for Dragons, plenty time to regroup ahead of next clash
Dindigul Dragons were bowled out for 93 in 16.2 overs. Ashwin had a tough day at the office with the ball as well. He conceded 28 runs from two overs. IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans chased down the target with nine wickets in hand and 49 balls to spare. Opener Tushar Raheja smashed six fours and five sixes in his unbeaten 39-ball 65.
The big loss led to Dindigul Dragons slipping to fifth position on the points table. Currently, their net run rate (NRR) is second-worst in the league. Dindigul Dragons will have enough time to regroup. They will go up against Siechem Madurai Panthers at SCG Cricket Ground, Salem on June 14 (Saturday).
