Retired at 27 due to 13 concussions, Ex-Australia batter sues his school for mishandling injury 12 years ago

Once considered a prodigal talent, made his Test debut against India and scored a half-century, Will Pucovski's career came to a sad end in 2025 as he retired from Test cricket at the age of 27. Pucovski suffered as many as 13 concussions in his professional cricket career, took several breaks before he decided to hang up his boots. Now, a cricket commentator/expert, Pucovski has sued his private school Brighton Grammar for allegedly mishandling a concussion injury he suffered when he was 16 years old.

In 2014, Pucovski suffered a concussion after a tackle during a football training session. As per the former Victorian batter's lawyers, he did not receive the ideal medical attention and he kept training.

But, a day later, Pucovski suffered blurred vision. His health deteriorated, leading to hospitalisation a week later.

As per a report by Australia's News Corp, the batter's lawyers have accused Brighton Grammar of not adhering to its duty oof care.

Pucovski's last appearance was in a Sheffield Shield game against Tasmania. He was hit by a bouncer from Riley Meredith and left the field retired hurt after facing just two balls.

Pucovski retired after a tough year 

After calling time on his professional cricket career, Pucovski had revealed that he struggled to do basic chores around the house which annoyed her fiancé.

“My fiancee was annoyed because I didn’t contribute to chores. I was sleeping a lot,” he said.

“From there it’s been a tough year, a lot of the symptoms didn’t go away, which has led me to this decision.”

What Pucovski said about football injury?

In a recent event at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, Pucovski recalled the injury during a football training session as a teenager.

“I got sling tackled into ironically one of my best mate’s knees who was running the other way,” he recalled.

“It is probably the biggest day of my life in a weird way because I have never felt the same since that day.”

Pucovski’s Test debut and short first-class career

Pucovski made his debut in Sydney Test in Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21. He scored 62 runs from 110 balls in his debut innings. He was dismissed cheaply by Mohammed Siraj in the second innings. The Test ended in a draw.

He amassed 2,350 runs from 36 first-class games, averaging 45.19, scoring seven tons and nine fifties.
