Amid rampant speculation across social media concerning a potential trade that would see star batter Rohit Sharma move from the Mumbai Indians (MI) to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the Mumbai franchise has delivered a clear statement. The rumours gained significant traction, fueled in part by KKR's recent appointment of Abhishek Nayar as head coach, who shares a close working relationship with Rohit. Despite the public buzz, MI itself never gave any hint that a trade was being considered.
Mumbai Indians quash Rohit Sharma trade rumours
The final word on the matter has now come from within the franchise. As per a Cricbuzz report, an MI source has confirmed them that the celebrated former captain will not be going anywhere, categorically stating: "Rohit is not going anywhere and he will not play for any other side in the IPL." This firmly puts an end to the swirling rumours and confirms Rohit's future remains secured with MI for the upcoming IPL seasons.

Rohit Sharma's legacy at Mumbai Indians
Rohit Sharma's initial success with the Mumbai Indians (MI) quickly elevated him into the franchise's core leadership group. He made his captaincy debut on a stand-in basis in 2019, leading MI to their fourth IPL title with a thrilling one-run victory over the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2019 final. He cemented his legacy the following year, guiding the team to a second consecutive title by defeating the Delhi Capitals in the 2020 final. This triumph made MI only the second team in IPL history, after CSK, to achieve the feat of winning back-to-back championships.
Despite this period of unprecedented dominance, MI's fortunes waned, and the team has not appeared in an IPL final since 2020. Ahead of the IPL 2024 season, the management made a significant decision, removing Rohit from the captaincy. He has since been playing under Hardik Pandya, who was appointed as the new skipper. This situation is particularly notable because Pandya had previously served as Rohit's deputy in the Indian national team before taking over the leadership role at the Mumbai franchise. The shift in roles extends beyond the IPL, reflecting the fluid nature of T20 leadership in Indian cricket. Although Hardik Pandya was widely anticipated to take over as India's T20I captain after the 2024 T20 World Cup, this transition did not materialize, and he played the tournament under Rohit's command. Currently, while Pandya captains MI in the IPL, he now plays T20Is for India under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav, further highlighting the recent changes in the hierarchy of the Indian white-ball squads.
