Cricketing god Sachin Tendulkar was the king of cricket as the legendary batter's massive records stayed untouched even after 10 years of his retirement. In the ODI World Cup 2023, batting great Virat Kohli stepped up and smashed a century in the India vs England semi-final in the 2023 World Cup. Kohli broke one of Tendulkar’s biggest records by becoming the first player to score 50 centuries in One Day Internationals (ODIs). After breaking his record, Kohli bowed to Tendulkar, took his blessings, and moved forward.
Despite that, Tendulkar also leads the chart with a mind-boggling 15921 runs from 200 Tests, but in the last couple of years, former England captain Joe Root has broken all the records. He becomes the second-highest run-getter in the longest format of the game behind Sachin Tendulkar. Root is just 2378 runs shy from eclipsing Tendulkar. Tendulkar, thus far, stayed away from talking much about Root's record, but during an AMA session with Reddit, Sachin, its brand ambassador, replied to a question about Root being 'second only' to him.
Replying to the question 'What was your first impression of Joe Root? Also, he has now crossed 13,000 Test runs and is second only to you, and he played his 1st match against you,' Sachin said: "To have gone past 13000 runs is a remarkable achievement, and he’s still going strong. When I saw him for the first time in Nagpur in 2012 during his debut Test, I told my teammates that they were watching the future captain of England. What impressed me most was the way he was able to assess the wicket and how he rotated the strike. I knew at that very moment that he would be a big player."
Root's last international Test outing came in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, where he surpassed Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-getter in Tests. He was the second-highest run-getter in the five-Test match series after Shubman Gill. He scored 537 runs in five Test outings, including three centuries and one fifty.
