'We thought he already was...': Iceland Cricket's indirect dig at selectors as Cheteshwar Pujara announces retirement from international cricket

Iceland Cricket, who are known for their witty social media posts, recently took an indirect dig at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for ignoring Cheteshwar Pujara in India's Test squad for two long years. After not being able to get a chance to don the India jersey, the batting great bid adieu to all formats of Indian cricket on August 25. 

Pujara was one of the greatest pillars of India's Test team. He ended his career as the eighth-highest run scorer for India, with 7,195 Test runs at an average of 43.60 with 19 centuries to his name in 103 Tests.

Soon after his retirement, the cricketing fraternity and fans invited a storm of congratulatory messages for the India legend, but among all, Iceland's cricket post on Pujara caught the attention. They wrote that they thought Pujara had already retired. 

"We are not going to comment on Cheteshwar Pujara's decision to retire from Test cricket, because we thought he already was" wrote Iceland Cricket. 

 

Pujara, who made his international debut against Australia in Bengaluru on October 9, 2010, and his last Test outing came in 2023 against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at The Oval. In his 15-year-long Test career, Pujara donned the India jersey in 103 Tests, where he scored 7,195 Test runs at 43.60, laced with 19 hundreds and 35 half-centuries. He also played a crucial role in Virat Kohli-led India during the team's first-ever series win in Australia.

Pujara recently seen doing commentary duties during the five-Test match series of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy between India and England which was ended 2-2 draw.
