South Africa spinner Simon Harmer has been named as International Cricket Council's (ICC) Player of the Month for November after a phenomenal performance against India in the two-match Test series. He played a key role in the Proteas inflicting a series whitewash over the Men in Blue and picked up 17 wickets in four innings.
Harmer was named the Player of the Match for the first game and was even named the Player of the Series for his stunning display in the assignment. This superb performance saw him beat Bangladesh's Taijul Islam and Pakistan's Mohammad Nawaz to claim his first Player of the Month award.
The 36-year-old shared his remarks on winning the prestigious award.
“It’s a privilege to be named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for November. Playing for my country is a dream come true and anything else that comes from it as a result is a bonus,” Harmer stated.
“I share this award with my teammates, coaches and support staff and dedicate it to my family who allow me to go out and live my dream, often having to leave them at home to do so. It’s a privilege to be a part of the Proteas team and I hope to enjoy many more successful seasons with this remarkable group of people,” he added.
Harmer's stellar display in the series
Harmer was undoubtedly South Africa's most dominant bowler during the Test series, recording figures of 4/30 and 4/21 in the first and second innings respectively. He then followed that up by recording figures of 3/64 and 6/37 in the first and second innings of the final Test. The Proteas defeated the hosts in both the games and Harmer had a big role to play in both of those wins.
Harmer's international career so far
The spinner hasn't played a lot of international cricket in his career so far and has only featured for South Africa in red-ball cricket. He has played 14 Tests so far, clinching a total of 69 wickets with two 5-wicket-hauls and seven 4-wicket-hauls. Despite not getting a lot of chances, Harmer has been impressive when called up to the playing XI.
