South Africa announce 15-member Test squad for India tour, WTC-winning captain returns

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on October 27 announced their squad for two-Test series against India, starting November 14. South Africa’s World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final-winning captain Temba Bavuma has returned after recovering from injury. He will take over the captaincy duties from Aiden Markram who played a 1-1 draw against Pakistan in the recently concluded two-Test series. 

"Test captain Temba Bavuma returns to the side after missing the recent Pakistan Test series as he completes his recovery from a left calf strain," CSA said in a statement.

 

 

The two-Test series will begin on November 14 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. David Bedingham is the only player who was part of the squad for Pakistan tour who won't feature in the series against India. From two Tests against India, Bedingham has 79 runs, including a 56-run knock.

Bavuma's phenomenal Test captaincy record to be challenged

Bavuma made his Test captaincy debut in 2023. Since then, South Africa haven't lost a single Test under his leadership. From 10 Tests with Bavuma as captain, South Africa have won nine whereas one ended in a draw.

South Africa aim to end 15-year drought of Test win in India

South Africa haven't won a Test on Indian soil since February 2010. Their last Test win came against Graeme Smith's captaincy in Nagpur. The Proteas won by an innings and six runs. On their last tour, South Africa faced a 3-0 cleansweep against Virat Kohli-led side.

South Africa's only Test series win on Indian soil came in 2000 under Hansie Cronje's leadership. They won the two-Test series 2-0.

Crucial WTC points up for grabs 

With four wins and one draw from Tests, India are placed third on the WTC 2025-27 points table. Shubman Gill-led India have a win percentage of 61.90. On the other hand, South Africa kicked off their WTC campaign on Pakistan soil. After a defeat, they opened their win account. The win at Rawalpindi was their first on Pakistan soil since 2008.
