South African all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel's contract terminated for leaving match midway to catch flight

South Africa's Beyers Swanepoel faced a heavy punishment for leaving a game midway to catch a flight. South Africa's domestic team Lions terminated the all-rounder's contract a year before its original expiration. Swanepoel left the field during the final of the One-Day Cup, leaving his side to field with only 10 players, which eventually resulted in Lions' defeat against Titans.

Lions Terminate Beyers Swanepoel's contract with immediate effect

Swanepoel walked away to catch a flight to England, where he was supposed to represent Worcestershire in the County Championship. However, reports claimed that he does not have the mandatory No Objection Certificate (NOC) to play for the club.

After the incident, Lions terminated Swanepoel's contract with immediate effect. Lions CEO Jono Leaf-Wright addressed the issue in an official statement, calling the incident "unfortunate" but assured that all the concerned parties have reached a conclusion.

"It has been an unfortunate period for all parties involved, but we have now brought the matter to a close, allowing everyone to move forward," said Jono Leaf-Wright.

He further said that Lions highly value the work ethics and take matters regarding professionalism with utmost seriousness.

"At Lions Cricket, we hold ourselves to the highest professional standards and take matters of this nature very seriously," concluded Jono Leaf-Wright.

Beyers Swanepoel's stats in domestic cricket

The 27-year-old has played 48 first class matches where he managed to score 1461 runs at an average of 26.2 and a strike rate of 82.1, with the ball he picked up 187 wickets at an economy rate of 3.12. In List A, the all-rounder has played 55 games amassing 663 runs at an average of 23.7 with a strike rate of 117.8, backed with 83 wickets at an economy rate of 4.25.
