The New Zealander, for now, continues to rehabilitate injuries to his left hamstring and calf

The announcement adds to a difficult period for one of New Zealand’s most promising young pacemen

Big blow for New Zealand as the national team won't be able to feature the star bowler against India in the Test and ODI series. Will O’Rourke will miss the entirety of India’s upcoming multi-format tour. According to a report by the national’s cricket governing body, the player will be prioritizing his health and recovery instead of playing to avoid making it worse.

The New Zealander, for now, continues to rehabilitate injuries to his left hamstring and calf. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure, with the Black Caps prioritising the 25-year-old’s long-term fitness ahead of a demanding four-Test series in Australia later this year. O’Rourke had been in contention for both the ODI and Test legs of the India series.

Head coach Rob Walter disappointed but is hopeful for his return

However, following discussions between the player, the medical staff and the coaching group, the consensus was that further time was required to rebuild his bowling loads safely. Head coach Rob Walter described the outcome as disappointing but necessary. He said:

“It’s obviously disappointing for Will to have to miss such a marquee tour at home against India.”

Walter added:

“He was set to feature in both the ODI and Test series, but following subsequent discussions, we all agreed it was best for him to take some more time to rehabilitate both injuries and safely build up his bowling loads.”

Walter further said:

“Our pace bowling resources will be critical over the next few months, so we’re taking a conservative approach to Will’s return to ensure he’s fully fit before he takes the field again.”

Speaking on his comeback, the head coach revealed:

“Ideally he’ll be able to return for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, and in a perfect world he’ll be ready to go for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9.”

O’Rourke continues to recover from injury as his return gets delayed

The announcement adds to a difficult period for one of New Zealand’s most promising young pacemen. O’Rourke returned to international cricket in April during the white-ball tour of Bangladesh after a seven-month absence caused by a back stress fracture. He then featured in all three Tests of the series against England in June, contributing ten wickets as the Black Caps secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the World Test Championship contest.

O’Rourke’s campaign ended prematurely, however, as he suffered a hamstring tear on the final day of the third Test in Nottingham. His recovery was delayed further when a subsequent calf strain sustained during a training session in late August further delayed. In his 14 Tests to date, O’Rourke has recorded 49 wickets at an average fractionally under 25, establishing himself as a hostile and consistent new-ball threat. His absence will be felt across formats, particularly in the longer game where New Zealand’s pace stocks remain a critical resource.

India’s tour of New Zealand begins with five T20 Internationals from 22 October to 1 November, followed by five One-Day Internationals between 4 and 15 November. The two-Test series is scheduled for 19-23 November at the Basin Reserve in Wellington and 27 November-1 December at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. New Zealand are expected to name their squad for the series on Sunday.

The side has already been forced into adjustments for the T20 leg after Mark Chapman, who is suffering from a hamstring injury, and Zak Foulkes’ hip flexor injury forced them out. While the immediate focus remains on the home series against a strong Indian side, the longer-term planning is clear. The four-Test tour of Australia, beginning in Perth on 9 December, forms a crucial part of the current World Test Championship cycle.

By managing O’Rourke carefully now, New Zealand hope to have one of their leading strike bowlers available and fully fit for the challenges of Australian conditions. However, they still have deadly bowlers to stop the opponents, but O’Rourke’s absence will be felt. After making an impactful start to his international career, including unforgettable performances in India and at home, he has spent some notable parts of time on the sidelines.

For the Black Caps, the task now is to cover the gap left by O’Rourke’s absence while the young quick continues his rehabilitation. On the other hand, for the player, he is hopeful to finally return in domestic cricket with Canterbury in the Plunket Shield towards the end of December. This will be followed by a targeted comeback against Australia if everything goes as per the plan.
