Suryakumar Yadav sends message to Shreyas Iyer after losing India's T20I captaincy, says 'Most importantly...'

Suryakumar Yadav has been officially removed as India's T20I captain as Shreyas Iyer has been handed over the leadership role for the shortest format ahead of a packed cricketing calendar. Shreyas' immediate assignments include the upcoming tours of Ireland and England in June and July, followed by the highly anticipated Asian Games 2026.

In a stark contrast of fortunes, Suryakumar was left out of the squad entirely. This drastic decision follows a comprehensive review of India's leadership group by the BCCI management after the conclusion of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Although Suryakumar successfully captained India to the global title earlier this year, his position became untenable after an extended poor run of form with the bat. His individual output during the World Cup on home soil was relatively muted, yielding 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136.72. This slump was heavily compounded during the IPL 2026 season, where he managed a meager 270 runs across 13 innings at a disappointing average of 20.76 for MI.

However, Suryakumar finally gave his reaction on the key development and said that it's a proud moment for Mumbai cricket as three back-to-back T20I captains have been a Mumbaikar.

“Very happy for Shreyas Iyer. We played a lot of cricket for Mumbai and India together. Most importantly 3 back to back T20I captains for India from Mumbai now and it it very proud moment for all of us at Mumbai cricket,” Suryakumar said during T20 Mumbai league.

This changing of the guard signals the BCCI’s clear intent to build a rejuvenated, forward-looking T20 unit. With long-term milestones on the horizon, specifically the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics and the subsequent T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the selectors are prioritizing longevity and structural stability. Iyer’s appointment marks a fascinating tactical pivot, given that he has not actually featured in a T20I for India since December 2023. Throughout his international career in the shortest format, the stylish right-hander has accumulated 1,104 runs across 51 appearances, boasting a top score of 74 not out. He came close to a return this past January when he was drafted into the squad against New Zealand as an injury replacement for Tilak Varma, though he ultimately remained on the bench.
