Tanzid Hasan creates history, becomes first Bangladesh batter to score a Test century in Australia

The exuberance of Bangladeshi youth is on display at Marrara Cricket Ground, Darwin in the opening Test of the series against a veteran Australian side. The current World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 table toppers have been shocked by a touring Bangladesh side. After Hasan Mahmud’s six-fer on Day 1, opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim scored his maiden Test century. Tanzid became the first Bangladesh batter to score a Test century on Australian soil.

In the second session of Day 2, Tanzid took a single off Nathan Lyon's last delivery of the 11th over to reach the milestone. Known for not going against his natural instinct to attack, the southpaw faced 188 deliveries to achieve the three figures.

Overall, Tanzid is the second Bangladesh batter to score a Test century against Australia. The first one came 20 years ago. Shahriar Nafees scored 138 runs from 274 deliveries against Australia in Fatullah.

The previous best score by a Bangladesh batter in Australia belonged to Hannan Sarkar. He scored 76 runs from 136 balls against Australia in Cairns in 2003.

Tanzid is also the first visiting batter to score a Test century in Darwin. Overall, the 25-year-old is the third batter to score a Test ton in Darwin. The other two are Darren Lehmann (110) and Steve Waugh (100 not out). Both of them scored a century each against Bangladesh in 2003.

Tanzid makes the early drop count

On Day 1, Tanzid got an early reprieve when Lyon dropped a catch of Josh Hazlewood's first over. The youngster learned from the hiccup and returned not out for 32 off 67 deliveries. He reached his half-century in the first session of Day 2, taking 102 deliveries.

Tanzid helps Bangladesh take lead

On the other end, Mominul Haque missed a chance to score fifty. He got out caught behind for a 95-ball 49 to Hazlewood. Tanzid was batting on 74 at the end of first session. He shared a 93-run partnership for the third wicket with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. Shortly after getting to his century, Tanzid took the aerial route against Lyon to get caught by Mitchell Starc at long-off. His 101 off 197 balls was laced with eight fours and a six.

When Tanzid departed, Bangladesh are 231/3 with a 33-run lead in the bag already. Bangladesh are set to take a sizeable first innings lead until and unless they suffer a batting collapse.
