South African all-rounder Marco Jansen will not feature in the upcoming 2025 edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) in the United States. Jansen, who played a pivotal role in Washington Freedom’s championship-winning campaign last year, will miss this season due to national team duties.
Standout Performer in 2024
Jansen had an impressive run during the 2024 MLC season, claiming 11 wickets across eight matches. His contributions peaked in the final, where he took three crucial wickets to help Washington Freedom clinch the title against the San Francisco Unicorns.
Franchise Releases Statement on Jansen’s Absence
In an official statement, Washington Freedom confirmed Jansen’s unavailability, citing South Africa’s international schedule under the ICC Future Tours Programme.
“This one hurts. Due to the International Cricket Council’s Future Tours Programme scheduling and Marco’s international commitment with South Africa, he won’t be joining us this season,” read the franchise’s statement.
They added a heartfelt message for their star performer:
“Wishing our speedster every success and looking forward to see him back with us next year.
Marco has been a huge part of the Washington Freedom set-up in our first two seasons. He was fantastic last year helping us win the final. His presence with the new ball and in the field, and his power hitting with the bat when required, went a long way to helping us win last season.”
A Crucial Loss Ahead of Title Defense
Washington Freedom, who lifted their maiden MLC title in 2024, will now have to adjust their plans without one of their most dependable match-winners. Jansen's all-round contributions—both with the ball and the bat—were instrumental in their successful campaign.
South African Stars Still Set to Feature
Despite Jansen’s absence, the 2025 MLC season will still see several South African cricketers in action. Wicketkeeper-batsmen Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen are among those confirmed to participate in the tournament.
MLC’s Growing Appeal
As the league gears up for its third season, the absence of a key player like Jansen highlights the growing overlap between global franchise leagues and international commitments. Washington Freedom will now look to fill the void left by the Proteas star as they aim to defend their title.
Washington Freedom 2025 Retained Players: Marco Jansen (South Africa), Glenn Maxwell (Australia), Lockie Ferguson (New Zealand), Rachin Ravindra (New Zealand), Steve Smith (Australia), Jack Edwards (Australia)
Other than Marco, Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen will also miss the tournament due to international commitments.
