Sourav Ganguly makes big prediction on Rohit and Virat's participation in 2027 World Cup

Though the back-to-back Test retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli left the entire cricketing world stunned, there is still hope that the duo will feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup. By the time the tournament begins, Rohit would be 40 while Virat would be 39. They are now only active as players in the one-day format so there is a big chance that they will participate in the competition.

Ganguly isn't sure if the duo will participate in the 2027 World Cup

However, legendary India cricketer Sourav Ganguly isn't entirely convinced and believes that it won't be easy for Rohit and Virat to make it to the tournament that is still two years away. He further stated that there is a possibility that either them or the game will go away from each other by that time.

"It won't be easy. 15 games a year. I've got no advice. I think they know the game as much as I do. And they will take a call. But all of us must understand that just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game," Ganguly told PTI.

Meanwhile, Rohit and Virat's retirements from red-ball cricket opened the doors for youngsters to make their way into India's squad. It also left the selection committee with the major task of choosing Rohit's successor as India's Test captain ahead of the England series and they went ahead with 25-year-old Shubman Gill. Elsewhere, both Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh were handed their maiden Test call-ups and additionally, Karun Nair was brought back into India's Test set-up after seven years.

On the other hand, Rohit and Virat still are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to ODIs and both of them played major roles in India's 2025 ICC Champions Trophy triumph. While the former played a crucial knock of 76 in the final against New Zealand, the latter finished as the Men in Blue's second-highest scorer of the tournament with 218 runs from five matches. Kohli also scored a remarkable hundred against arch-rivals Pakistan, carrying his side to a six-wicket victory. 

While Rohit still has a brilliant average of 48.76 in ODIs, Kohli also averages at an outrageous 57.88 in the format. If the duo do manage to make it to the 2027 World Cup, then they will still be the two players on whom the team will be counting on the most.
