Australia’s 30-year-old T20I specialist Tim David is reluctant to play ODIs. David, who is a T20 freelancer, has made himself unavailable for ODIs, revealed head coach Andrew McDonald ahead of three-ODI series against Pakistan. So far, David has played just four ODIs but McDonald sees potential in the big-hitter, especially after ODI retirement of Glenn Maxwell. They want him to bat at no.7 as a finisher in the ODI World Cup 2027 on South African soil.
"It is something we're looking at. Tim hasn't made himself available for ODI cricket as yet in amongst everything that he's doing, but open-minded that potentially that is a conversation down the track," McDonald said as quoted by ESPNCricinfo as Australia begin their preparations to defend the ODI World Champions title.
"TD (David) would need to obviously come to us around and signal his intention to play one-day international cricket. We used him in the build up to the last World Cup.
"TD was someone that we felt could potentially play in that finishing No.7 role. Will we be exposed there? Can Tim be a part of that conversation? Maybe. But ultimately this stage he is not available."

David made his ODI debut against South Africa in 2023. In the fourth T20Is he played on South African soil, he scored just 45 runs. It was also his last List A appearance. The 30-year-old isn’t playing 50-over cricket but hasn’t retirement from the format either.

Earlier, he played List A cricket as well. From 20 List A games, including the four ODIs against South Africa, he has scored 790 runs from 18 innings, averaging 60.76. He has a strike rate of 120.06 in the format. Also, he has two centuries and five fifties in One-Day cricket. On his List A debut for Singapore in 2019 against Qatar (no ODI status back then for both teams), he scored 75 runs from 87 balls at no.4 in an unsuccessful run chase.
