UAE captain Muhammad Waseem rewrote T20I record books at Sharjah Cricket Stadium in the T20I clash against Afghanistan on September 1. Waseem’s blazing half-century went in vain but he broke former India captain Rohit Sharma’s record for most sixes as skipper in T20Is.
Waseem hit six sixes in his 37-ball 67 to break Rohit's record. His record-breaking six came in the third over of the run chase against Afghan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
Now, he has 110 sixes from 54 games as UAE's T20I captain. Rohit held the previous record with 105 sixes from 62 games as T20I captain. No other batter has 100 sixes as T20I captain. Among current captains Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza comes closest with 59 sixes as T20I captain from 42 games.
Waseem leaves Guptill behind, chases double century of T20I sixes
Waseem also became the second-highest six-hitter in T20I history. He went past former New Zealand opener Martin Guptill who hit 173 sixes from 122 T20Is. Waseem has 176 sixes from just 80 T20Is. The top spot belongs to Rohit with 205 sixes from 159 T20Is.

UAE will play at least two games leading up to the T20 Asia Cup 2025 at home. In the ongoing T20I tri-series, they will face Pakistan and Afghanistan this week. In the continental tournament, UAE are placed in Group A alongside India, Oman and Pakistan. UAE will open their campaign against Suryakumar Yadav-led India at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10.
Waseem goes past Rohit and Williamson
Waseem also went past Rohit on another list. He is now second on the list of captains with most fifty-plus scores in T20Is. This was his 17th fifty-plus score. He went past Rohit and former New Zealand T20I captain Kane Williamson who had 16 such scores. The only batter ahead of him is Pakistan's discarded T20I batter Babar Azam who has 26 fifty-plus scores.
2nd loss in tri-series for UAE
Despite Waseem's 37-ball 67 chasing a target of 189, UAE lost by 38 runs. He rued missing the chance to finish the game. Also, he blamed bowlers for following a similar pattern and leaking runs in the second half.
“We did not bowl well in the last ten overs, gave away so many runs. We were going well after 8-9 overs (in the chase). We surely lose the game (after that), losing two wickets - myself and Asif Khan. (On his hitting) Not happy to be honest with my work because I could not finish the game. We will learn from today as well. Always we are giving runs in the last ten overs. Today as well, we will take the positives and then look at where we are giving away boundaries and hopefully work on it,” Waseem said in the post-match presentation.
