India's T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill is one of the few Test players who will be rested for the three-T20I series against Bangladesh. Gill who led a second-string Indian side to a 4-1 win over Zimbabwe in July will slip the limited-overs series against Bangladesh starting October 7.
As per a report by PTI, India's no.3 batter in Tests will skip the T20I series ahead of the three-Test series against New Zealand. He is one of the few players who will recharge ahead of the gruelling season of Test cricket.
"Yes, Shubman will be rested for the Bangladesh T20I series. If you look at the fixture, the three T20Is will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), 10 (Delhi) and 13 (Hyderabad). Now first Test vs New Zealand starts October 16.
"So with a turnaround of three days, it is important to give Gill a break," a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
The Test series will commence on September 19 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. The second Test is scheduled to start on September 27 at Green Park, Kanpur. He has scored 157 runs from four innings against Bangladesh including a century.
Abhishek to make comeback?
It will be interesting to see if Abhishek Sharma who scored a century in his second T20I walks back into the side for the home series against Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side. Players like Jasprit Bumrah are likely to skip the T20I series as well.
India’s calendar for 2024
Gill recently led India A in the first round of Duleep Trophy 2024 where he registered scores of 25 and 21 in first and second innings respectively. After the Test series against New Zealand which concludes in first week of November, it is yet to be seen if India sends their A team to South Africa for four-T20I series from November 8 to 15. Gill will definitely be on the flight to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar series starting November 22.
