Former India speedster Varun Aaron has joined Sunrisers Hyderabad as their bowling coach ahead of the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The speedster represented India in all three formats before announcing retirement in January 2025.
The star speedster joined the 2016 IPL winners, replacing New Zealand's former all-rounder James Franklin, who performed the role in the 2025 season. Aaron played 52 IPL matches, scalping 44 wickets at a strike rate of 22.59. He represented multiple IPL franchises, including Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals in his 11-year IPL career.
SRH, who were the runners-up in 2024, had a forgettable outing in the last edition of the cash-rich league, being eliminated after league matches. Daniel Vettori is the current SRH head coach with Simon Helmot as his assistant. Muttiah Muralitharan is the spin-bowling coach.
The main reason behind SRH's downfall in the last edition of the tournament was evident flaws in their bowling department, with the likes of Mohammed Shami, Simarjeet Singh, and Adam Zampa registering abysmally high economy rates. While Harshal Patel emerged as their go-to man with the ball, skipper Pat Cummins performed in patches, recording a bowling average of 28.12.
SRH took their 'X', formerly known as Twitter to announce that they have appointed Varun Aaron as their bowling coach.
"A fiery addition to our coaching staff! Welcome Varun Aaron as our new bowling coach" wrote Varun Aaron.
Varun Aaron has represented India in nine Tests and nine ODIs for India from 2011 to 2015. He has picked 18 Test wickets and 11 in ODIs. Aaron has also played for five IPL teams during his days from 2011 to 2022. He was part of the Delhi Daredevils team in IPL 2011 and 2012, before playing for the then Royal Challengers Bangalore from 2014 to 2016. Aaron played for the then Kings XI Punjab (2017), Rajasthan Royals (2019-20) and Gujarat Titans in 2022.
