India's T20 World Cup 2007 and ODI World Cup 2011 winning member Yuvraj Singh turned back the clock in the opening encounter of the International Masters League T20 2025 on February 22. At Dr DY Patil Sports Academy, Navi Mumbai, Yuvraj stunned the crowd, his teammates and the Sri Lankan batter Lahiru Thirimanne as he took an acrobatic catch on the boundary.
In the eighth over of Sri Lanka Masters' run chase, Thirimanne took on left-arm pacer Irfan Pathan. He hit the ball towards long-on where Yuvraj was stationed. The 43-year-old all-rounder saw the ball going over him. He leaped and got both hands to the ball. He fell on the ground but just inside the boundary as the crowd went berserk. Thirimanne could not believe it as Yuvraj's teammates including captain Sachin Tendulkar rushed to congratulate him.ย
Thirimanne departed after scoring 24 runs from 17 balls. Pathan went on to take two more wickets. In his next over, he dismissed Sangakkara and Chaturanga de Silva off consecutive deliveries. He conceded 39 runs in his quota of four overs. Despite Sangakkara's fifty and cameos from Gunaratne (25-ball 37), Jeevan Mendis (17-ball 42) and Isuru Udana (7-ball 23), Sri Lanka lost the match by four runs. Sri Lanka managed to post 218/9 in the high-scoring encounter.
Binny Yusuf go big
Earlier, Yuvraj played a few big shots as well. The southpaw hit two fours and a couple of sixes. Stuart Binny and Yusuf Pathan scored fifties to help India Masters post 222/4. After Ambati Rayudu and Tendulkar were dismissed cheaply by pacer Suranga Lakmal, Gurkeerat Singh and Stuart Binny shared an 87-run partnership for the third wicket. The partnership was broken by Chaturanga. Gurkeerat hit seven fours in his 32-ball 44.ย
Binny smashed seven sixes and three fours in his 31-ball 68 before falling to left-arm pacer Udana. Yuvraj and Yusuf shared an unbeaten 76-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Yusuf whacked six sixes and three fours in his unbeaten 22-ball 56.
