India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak gave his verdict on the workload concerns surrounding Shubman Gill. This comes after the latter has featured for the Men in Blue constantly in different formats. After playing a key role in India's Champions Trophy final, Gill had a gruelling IPL campaign as the skipper of Gujarat Titans. He was then appointed as India's Test captain and led them in the five-match Test series against England and is now acting as the side's vice-captain in Asia Cup.
The 26-year-old will be leading India in the two-match Test assignment against West Indies that will begin from October 2, just days after the conclusion of Asia Cup. It is safe to say that Gill has already been involved in a lot of cricket matches this year and it doesn't look like he will be able to take a break anytime soon.
This has led to a lot of concerns regarding his workload, however Kotak feels that batters do not need get their workload managed properly. He further revealed the team approach on the matter, emphasising that they generally only manage the workload of seamers.
“I don’t know how you look at workload management, but generally we do it for bowlers, mainly fast bowlers. When it comes to batsmen, only if they mentally feel that cricket has become too much for them does it become a concern. In my view, workload management is actually meant for fast bowlers. For batsmen, I don’t think workload management is that much of an issue," Kotak told reporters.
Kotak's verdict on Arshdeep's exclusion
Kotak also broke his silence on Arshdeep Singh's exclusion from the playing XI. The left-arm India pacer wasn't present in the Men in Blue side for the clash against UAE and following the fantastic performance of their bowling attack during the match, there are chances that the 26-year-old will also not be included from the XI for the upcoming match against Pakistan. When asked about Arshdeep's exclusion, Kotak stated that there is no persoanl agenda when it comes to such decisions.
"Because, the first discussion we have with the head coach and the captain is that obviously, these 15 are like this, everyone deserves to play. If any player is not playing, it will be difficult for him because he will feel missed out. But, at the end of the day, it's a team sport. So, everyone knows that there is no agenda, there is no personal liking, disliking. Whatever is best for the team, captain and head coach will decide and do that. And I don't think there is any doubt in anybody's mind. So, whoever is not playing, they are always trying to help the guys who are playing," Kotak stated.
