What happened when India took on Sri Lanka in a Test in Galle last time?

After a win in the three-day practice game, Shubman Gill-led India are set to resume their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign against Sri Lanka. The first Test is scheduled to begin on August 19 at Galle International Stadium. India haven't lost a Test against Sri Lanka since 2015. India's last Test defeat to Sri Lanka was in Galle. However, the last time India and Sri Lanka locked horns in Galle, the visitors registered a comprehensive win.

Ahead of the series opener, here's a look at India's previous Test clash against the island nation in Galle.

Dhawan, Pujara’s daddy hundreds help India post 600

In July-August 2017, India toured Sri Lanka for a three-Test series under Virat Kohli's leadership. Kohli won the toss and opted to bat first. Abhinav Mukund fell early but opener Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara went on to score centuries. Dhawan missed his ton by 10 runs. He took 168 deliveries to score 190 runs, including 31 fours. Pujara batted in traditional fashion, scoring 153 runs from 265 balls. Kohli was dismissed cheaply and became one of Nuwan Pradeep's six victims. Ajinkya Rahane, Hardik Pandya's fifties, Ravichandran Ashwin's 47 and other cameos helped India post 600 on the board.

Sri Lanka bowled out under 300

In reply, Sri Lanka lost three wickets early. Upul Tharanga was dismissed run out for 64. Later Angelo Mathews' 83 and Dilruwan Perera's unbeaten 90 helped Sri Lanka get close to 300. Sri Lanka were bowled for 291 in 78.3 overs but Kohli chose not to enforce the follow-on.

No follow-on for hosts, Kohli scores ton

After 190 in the first innings, Dhawan was dismissed for a run-a-ball 14 in the second. Pujara couldn't play for long either and departed for 15. Opener Abhinav Mukund and skipper Kohli shared a 133-run stand for the third wicket. Mukund missed a chance to score a century and lost his wicket for 81 off 116 balls. Kohli went on to score a century and Rahane's cameo helped them post 240/3. Kohli declared and set a 550-run target for Sri Lanka.

Ashwin, Jadeja share spoils

In the run chase, Upul Tharanga and Danushka Gunathilaka returned to the dressing room early. Dimuth Karunaratne held on to one end but did not get much support from other end until Niroshan Dickwella. They shared a 101-run stand for the fifth wicket. Dickwella was dismissed for 67 and Karunaratne followed. Both left-handers fell to Ashwin. The opener missed his ton by just three runs. Dilruwan remained unbeaten again but Sri Lanka were bowled out for 245. Jadeja and Ashwin picked three each as India won by 304 runs.

Dhawan was named 'Player of the match' for his 190-run knock in the first innings. India won the next two Tests by an innings. Kohli-led India completed a series cleansweep.

India vs Sri Lanka Galle head-to-head

However, Sri Lanka have a slight edge over India in Tests over the years. Sri Lanka have won three out of five Tests at the venue. The first was in 2001 when Sri Lanka beat India by 10 wickets. Seven years later, Virender Sehwag's unbeaten double century helped India win by 170 runs. In 2010, Sri Lanka registered another 10-wicket win over India in Galle. In 2015, India couldn't chase down 176 as Rangana Herath took a seven-wicket haul. India lost the Test by 63 runs.
