BCCI's stunning decision to choose Suryakumar Yadav as the successor of Rohit Sharma for the position of the Indian T20I captain instead of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya shook everyone. As the MI captain was Rohit's deputy in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024, so everyone was expecting Pandya to take the captaincy in the shortest format of the game. However, Surya's appointment as the captain dn Shubman Gill's appointment as the vice-captain in both white-ball formats came as a surprise to everyone.
Why BCCI choose Surya over Hardik?
As per the reports from Indian Express, the Men in Blue players are seemingly more comfortable in playing under Suryakumar Yadav's leadership. The report also states that there were massive arguments that happened for several hours over a span of two days over these spots before the final list of names came out.
Shubman Gill has been named the vice-captain in both the T20I and ODI series, which also gives the future thoughts of the Indian Cricket Board. Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah have still been rested. However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli who were earlier reported to be given rest for the Lanka tour have been called back. Hardik Pandya is part of the T20I team but was not included in the 50-over squad. Shreyas Iyer has also returned to the side for the ODIs and might get to play his first white-ball match this year.
