In the first ODI against England, West Indies faced a challenging situation at 220 for 5 after 40 overs while chasing 326. Jos Buttler-led England seemed to be gaining control, especially after the quick dismissals of Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford. Needing 106 in the last 10 overs, the West Indies captain, Shai Hope, and Romario Shepherd turned the tables, securing a thrilling win at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.
Captain Shai Hope and Romario Shepherd played a crucial role in the West Indies' historic victory. Shai Hope, with an unbeaten 109 off 83 balls, hit 7 sixes and 4 boundaries. Romario Shepherd contributed with a 29-ball 48, featuring 3 sixes and 4 boundaries. Their partnership of 89 runs for the 6th wicket proved pivotal.

This remarkable comeback by West Indies set a new record, as their chase of 106 runs in the last 10 overs is the second-highest in ODI history, following Pakistan's 109 against Bangladesh in 2014.
Shai Hope shared that advice from former Indian captain MS Dhoni played a crucial role in his approach. Dhoni's guidance about having more time at the crease than one thinks stuck with Hope. After the match, Hope expressed his happiness about the century being in a winning cause.
"I had a chat with MS Dhoni some time back and he told me that you always have a lot more time at the crease than you think and that stuck with me," Shai Hope said after West Indies's 4-wicket win.
"The century was in a winning cause and that's all I play for. Happy that we won," he added.
Despite a forgettable bowling performance by England's Sam Curran, who conceded 98 runs, there were positives for England with Harry Brook's 71 and Phil Salt's 45. Curran also contributed with the bat, scoring 38 off 26, and Brydon Carse added 31 not out off 21, helping England reach beyond 300.
Hope praised Shepherd and the openers, Alick Athanaze and Brandon King, for their performances. He acknowledged the need for improvement in the next game, emphasizing the importance of repeating such strong performances.
The series started on a high for West Indies, aiming to continue their success in the upcoming games. England, on the other hand, looks to bounce back after their middle-order struggle in this match.
