Will Jay Shah take over as ICC Chairman? Current head drops out of race: Here's all you need to know

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is likely to take over as International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman after Greg Barclay's resignation, as per The Age’s report. 

On August 20, New Zealand's Barclay chose not to compete after completing his tenure of four years.

"ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022," the ICC stated in a media release.

There has been no official confirmation from either Jay Shah or ICC. Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on December 1, 2024.

As reported by The Age, Shah has won support from Australia and England, among other countries, to run the ICC for at least three years under a revised constitution.

As per ICC rules, the chairman's election comprises 16 votes and a majority of nine votes is required (51%) for the winner. Earlier, to become the chairman, the chairman needed to have a two-thirds majority.

Can Shah serve at BCCI after becoming ICC chairman?

Shah has one more year left in his tenure as BCCI secretary. After that, he will go into a mandatory cooling off period of three years starting October 2025. As per BCCI constitution approved by the Supreme Court, an office bearer needs to go for a cooling off period of three years. However, in total, an office bearer can stay for a total of 18 years. In this case, he can state nine years in state association and the other half in BCCI.

Shah to join elite list

If Shah becomes ICC chairman, he can still serve as secretary in the BCCI for four more years. If the move is finalised, he will become the youngest chairman in ICC's history. He will join Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar on the list of Indians who have held the post of ICC chairman.
