India's Abhishek Sharma (L) and Varun Chakravarthy (R) celebrate with skipper Suryakumar Yadav after taking the wicket of England's Brydon Carse during the fifth and final T20I of the series at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on February 2, 2025.

Story Highlights:

Majority of Indian players have a good T20I record vs England.

Played just one game in T20 World Cup 2026, Kuldeep Yadav has been impressive against England.

For the third consecutive time, India face a similar foe in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup semifinal. The T20 giants find themselves locking horns again in the fight for a spot in the final. The last two times, it is even stevens between the two two-time T20 World Cup champions. As India look to lift the Wankhede Stadium semifinal curse, here’s a look at how India’s playing XI from previous match has fared against England in the format.

1. Abhishek Sharma

The opener has been struggling for form. After three consecutive ducks and a low score, he managed a half-century against Zimbabwe. He fumbled against West Indies again. But, he will regain some confidence after looking at his record against the English.

From five T20Is against them, he has 279 runs at an average of 55.80 and strike rate of 219.68. His T20I best of 135 came against England. Coincidentally, it came at Wankhede Stadium as well. He cane be used with the ball as well. He took three wickets at an average of 6.33.

2. Sanju Samson

Back-in-form Samson was challenged by short stuff from England pacers. In the five-T20I series last year, he managed to score 51 runs at an average of 10.20 and strike rate of 118.60.

3. Ishan Kishan

It has been over four years since Kishan faced England in T20Is. From three T20Is, he has 68 runs at an average of 22.66 and strike rate of 133.33. He has a half-century against England.

4. Suryakumar Yadav (c)

The skipper hasn’t been in at the peak of his powers since the match-winning fifty against USA in campaign opener. He showed glimpses of his old self with a 33-run cameo against Zimbabwe. From 13 T20Is against the English, he scored 349 runs at an average of 29.08 and strike rate of 171.92. He has a century and a fifty against them. He is India’s third highest run-scorer against England in the format.

5. Tilak Varma

Upped the strike rate after getting slotted into middle-order, Varma has scored 133 runs from five innings at an average of 44.33 and strike rate of 131.68. His best came in a tricky run chase of 166.

6. Hardik Pandya

All-rounder Hardik Pandya has a stellar record against England in the format. From 20 games, he has scored 414 runs at an average of 29.67 and strike rate of 148.38, featuring three half-centuries. He has a total of 19 wickets from 20 games at an average of 24.78, featuring two four-wicket hauls.

7. Shivam Dube

All-rounder Shivam Dube has scored 83 runs from three T20Is at an average of 27.66 and strike rate of 172.91. He scored a crucial half-century before getting concussed in Pune. He has bowled in just one innings against England and bagged two wickets from 11 runs in just two overs.

8. Axar Patel

Axar Patel has not had much success with the bat against England. From seven innings, he has scored 71 runs, averaging 11.83 and striking at 129.09. He has been economical with the ball, conceding at 7.37 runs per over. The left-arm spinner has eight wickets against them.

9. Arshdeep Singh

Arshdeep Singh has a decent record against England, bagging six wickets from as many games at an average of 23.66. His economy rate is 7.40 runs per over.

10. Varun Chakravarthy

The mystery spinner is India's second-highest wicket-taker against England. From five T20Is last year, he had 14 scalps, averaging under 10. He claimed a fifer in a losing cause. His economy rate is 7.66 runs per over.

11. Jasprit Bumrah

India's premier pacer has nine wickets from five T20Is but his economy rate of 5.34 runs per over stands out. Also, his average of 9.11 is even lower than that of Chakravarthy.

The bench strength’s numbers against England

Rinku Singh has scored 39 runs from two innings against the English at a strike rate of 121.87.

Washington Sundar has a lacklustre batting record, scoring 39 runs from four innings at a strike rate of 100. With the ball, he has five wickets at an average of 32.40.

Kuldeep Yadav has been exceptional against England in the shortest form. The wrist spinner has eight wickets, averaging 9.62 and conceding runs at 6.41 runs per over.

Siraj is the only player in the squad who is yet to play a T20I against England.
