New Zealand captain Amelia Kerr scripted history in the dead rubber of the three-ODI series against Zimbabwe. In the third ODI, Amelia claimed a hat-trick in her five-wicket haul as New Zealand beat Zimbabwe by 200 runs at University Oval, Dunedin on March 11.
Amelia became third New Zealand player to take a hat-trick in women's ODIs. The first was taken by Jule Harris against West Indies in World Cup 1993. Three years later, Emily Drumm took a hat-trick against Australia in a losing cause.
Amelia also created the record for most wickets in a bilateral ODI series. She claimed 16 wickets at an average of 5.68, including a record-breaking seven-fer. She also became the first captain in women's ODIs to take a seven-fer.
Amelia’s all-round show, Maddy misses ton
Earlier, Amelia won the toss and opted to bat first. She scored 80 runs from 106 balls, featuring 10 fours. Emma McLeod and Izzy Sharp got starts but failed to convert them into big scores. Maddy Green missed her century. She was dismissed for a 73-ball 94. Maddy's knock was studded with 12 fours. Brooke Halliday contributed with a run-a-ball 40 before getting run out. Cameos from Jess Kerr, Isabella Gaze took New Zealand to 303/6.
In the run chase, Zimbabwe suffered another collapse. Amelia mopped up the tail to bundle out the visitors for 103 in 27.1 overs. She claimed a hat-trick in the 24th over with the wickets of Adel Zimunu, Audrey Mazvishaya and Tendai Makusha. In just 3.1 overs, she bagged five wickets and conceded 22 runs.
She also became the first bowler take an ODI hat-trick against Zimbabwe. For Zimbabwe, Loreen Tshuma top-scored with a 41-ball 34.
"I am known more for my wrong' un but really pleased with how the leggies have come out this series." the 25-year-old said after the game.
What’s next for Amelia’s New Zealand?
New Zealand will now go up against in the five-T20I series at home against South Africa. It will work as preparation for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on England soil. Amelia is also nearing a milestone. She needs one more wicket to complete 100 T20I wickets.
