During the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, Daryl Mitchell arrived at the crease when the required run rate was rapidly slipping out of the grasp. Daryl was trying to stitch a partnership with skipper Mitchell Santner and hit Arshdeep Singh for two sixes in an over. Arshdeep was furious and he threw the ball at Daryl on follow-through which irked the usually calm Kiwi all-rounder. While skipper Suryakumar Yadav intervened to pacify Daryl, later, Arshdeep apologised to the BlackCaps player in his own manner. However, head coach Gautam Gambhir said that he would have been fine had Arshdeep not apologised to the opposition player.
"You are representing your country and you are bound to show aggression. There's nothing wrong with it. Even if you throw the ball back, that's completely alright. No bowler in this world wants to be hit for two sixes, and that is the kind of response I want to see from my players. I would have been fine even if Arshdeep had not apologised to Daryl Mitchell," Gambhir said on the ANI Podcast.
“There was no need to say sorry. It's good on him that he apologised, but on a cricket field, there are no friends and no enemies. Your job is simply to win games for your country,” he added.
On March 10, the left-arm pacer was fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. It relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.” Arshdeep has been handed one demerit point for the Level 1 offence.
Daryl managed to score just 17 runs from 11 balls. Arshdeep remained wicketless in his quota of four overs, conceding 32 runs.
Arshdeep’s way of apologising
After India’s 96-run win to win their third title, Arsdheep revealed that he walked up to Daryl and apologised to him as the throw was unintentional.
"I went to say sorry to Mitchell. My throw reverse-swung a bit too much and it hit his body, so I told him that I didn't hit him intentionally," Arshdeep told the broadcasters.
Later, a video of both talking to each other after the match went viral on social media.
