Jos Buttler, Virat Kohli

Jos Buttler is congratulated by Virat Kohli after England won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup semi final match by 10 wickets at Adelaide Oval on November 10, 2022.

Story Highlights:

Jos Buttler averages under 10 in T20 World Cup 2026.

Buttler has a fabulous T20I record against India.

England's T20 World Cup-winning captain Jos Buttler is on the cusp of breaking Virat Kohli’s record for most runs in India-England T20I clashes. Buttler needs five more runs to get the record his name when England take the field at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal on March 5.

Kohli has 648 runs from 21 innings against England at an average of 38.11 and strike rate of 135. Kohli has five T20I fifties against the English.

Buttler is already the leading run-scorer against India in T20Is. From 27 T20Is, he has 644 runs at an average of 32.2 and strike rate of 143.75. He has five fifties against India, including an unbeaten 83 in the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal.

However, Buttler has struggled for form in the ongoing edition. From seven innings, the 35-year-old has scored 62 runs from seven innings at disappointing average of 8.85 and strike rate of 106.89.

Brook backs under-pressure Buttler

Last week, Buttler got skipper Harry Brook's backing. He backed him to come good, using his experience in the tournament going ahead.

"There's been a lot said about Jos," Brook said on November 27 after his two-ball duck against New Zealand. "I said the other day that he's played 150 [154] games for England [in T20Is] and people probably need to take a little step back from that. He's probably the best white-ball player to have ever played the game.

"He's in a little bit of a rut now, but I think that's an exciting thing for everybody in the world to know what he could produce in the next couple of games. He's obviously got a lot of fire in the belly and he wants to go out there and show everybody what he's made of. Look, he averages 34 [33.77] striking at 145 [147.77] in 150 [154] games. He's a phenomenal player and I have no doubts he'll go out and do well."

Buttler is the only current played with 1,000-plus runs in T20 World Cup history. He would look to better his record in the knockout game at Wankhede Stadium where he has plenty of experience.
