Opener Sanju Samson broke records with his unbeaten 97 to lead India to ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal with a five-wicket win over West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on March 1. Samson was overwhelmed with emotions as he finished the run chase with a six and a four in the final over. He fell to his knees and thanked god for his match-winning knock, celebrated with teammates and then did the same in the dressing room as well before kissing the bat.
After arguably the greatest innings of his life, Samson took to social media to express his emotions.
"It was also worth it," Samson wrote on Instagram.

Several Indian cricketers including Rishabh Pant and Yuzvendra Chahal commented on Samson's post.
Samson registered the highest score by an India batter in a T20 World Cup run chase. The previous record was held Virat Kohli with unbeaten 82s against Australia and Pakistan. The unbeaten 97 is also the fourth-highest score in a successful T20 World Cup run chase. In addition, it is the second-highest score by an Indian in T20 World Cups, only second to Suresh Raina's century which came against South Africa in the 2010 edition.
After the game, Samson talked about getting clarity of role. He talked about his experience in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and how he has learned from the greats like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
“I think that’s why I have been playing this format for a very long time. I think playing IPL around 10 to 12 years and playing for the country from last 10 years, I have not been playing, but looking from the dugout, learning from the greats like Virat Kohli, from Rohit Sharma, like all the greats. I think it’s very important to observe and learn and see what they were doing. I think that really helped me to, I think with my experience, I have only played maybe 50, 60 games, but I’ve seen around 100 games and I’ve seen how the greatest people have finished the games and how do they change their game according to the game,” the 31-year-old said in the post-match presentation.
Samson’s next challenge
India are set to take on Harry Brook’s England in the semifinal clash at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Samson had a tough time in the five-T20I series against England last year, scoring 51 runs from five innings. The last time he played at Wankhede Stadium was against England where he scored 16 runs.
