Pakistan’s T20 set-up could be heading for a major shake-up after the T20 World Cup 2026. Reports suggest that Captain Salman Ali Agha is likely to be removed from leadership, no matter how the team finishes in the showpiece event. A few senior players may also be playing their last T20 internationals.
Naqvi unhappy with Pakistan's T20 World Cup campaign
According to a PTI report, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi is unhappy with how the campaign has unfolded. A source said Naqvi had been assured by selectors, team management and close board officials that the team was well prepared and capable of performing strongly at the World Cup.
“Naqvi is not happy at all because this time he was assured by the selectors, team management and his close aides in the board that the team was set to do well in the World Cup,” the source said as quoted by PTI.
Salman Ali Agha's captaincy sacking confirmed
The same source added that Naqvi has decided to remove Salman from the T20 captaincy after the tournament. He is also expected to hold discussions with head coach Mike Hesson and the selectors about the future of some senior players.

“Salman, Babar Azam, Usman Khan and a few others will probably see curtains on their T20 international career after the World Cup,” the source said.
Who will be Pakistan's future captain?
Shadab Khan and Shaheen Shah Afridi are reportedly among the names being considered as possible replacements for the captaincy role.
It is understood that even before the tournament began, head coach Mike Hesson had spoken to Naqvi about the need to bring in younger players after the World Cup. The focus, he reportedly suggested, should be on building a squad that fits the demands of modern T20 cricket.
“So, after the World Cup, you can expect major changes in the Pakistan T20 set-up,” the source said.
Babar Azam is nearing the end of his T20I career
The report further stated that Babar Azam, who has played 145 T20 internationals, may also be nearing the end of his T20 career unless he produces a strong performance in the remaining matches, including the upcoming game against Sri Lanka and any potential knockout fixtures if Pakistan qualify.
