West Indies delivered a powerful performance to crush Zimbabwe by 107 runs in their Super Eights clash at the T20 World Cup at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Batting first, the Caribbean side piled up a massive 254/6 in 20 overs, the second-highest total in T20 World Cup history. It was an all-round batting display, led by a breathtaking knock from Shimron Hetmyer and strong support from captain Rovman Powell.
West Indies batting
Hetmyer was in destructive form. He smashed 85 runs off just 34 balls, hitting seven fours and seven sixes. He reached his half-century in only 19 balls, the fastest of the tournament so far, breaking his own earlier record. Zimbabwe had chances to stop him early, but dropped catches at crucial moments proved costly. Hetmyer made them pay in style.
Powell played an equally important role at the other end. He scored 59 off 35 balls, striking four fours and four sixes. Together, Hetmyer and Powell added 122 runs in just 52 balls for the third wicket, putting Zimbabwe completely on the back foot. The West Indies batters attacked from the start and never slowed down, smashing a total of 19 sixes in the innings.
Towards the end, Sherfane Rutherford (31 not out), Romario Shepherd (21), and Jason Holder (13) added quick runs to push the total past 250.
Zimbabwe's chase
Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggled on a flat pitch and had no answers to the constant assault. Chasing a daunting 255 for victory, Zimbabwe never really got going. Early wickets hurt their hopes, and they failed to build any major partnerships. Tadiwanashe Marumani scored 14 off 8 balls, while Dion Myers made 28 from 15 deliveries. Captain Sikandar Raza contributed 27, but wickets kept falling at regular intervals.
Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein were impressive with the ball for West Indies, picking up key wickets and tightening the pressure. Matthew Forde also chipped in with important breakthroughs. Zimbabwe were eventually bowled out well short of the target, handing West Indies a dominant 107-run victory.
