Yashasvi Jaiswal scored an unbeaten 173 on Day 1

Legendary spinner Anil Kumble believes that flamboyant opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is perfectly positioned to smash his first Test triple hundred for India on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Yashasvi Jaiswal cracks unbeaten 173 in 2nd Test against WI

Jaiswal was the standout performer on the opening day, batting for the entirety of the play and returning to the pavilion unbeaten on 173 (253), which was studded with 22 fours. After India chose to bat first, Jaiswal initially adopted a cautious approach to negate the early threat posed by the movement from the West Indies fast bowlers.

The star southpaw accelerated through the gears in the second session, reaching his fifty in 82 deliveries. He added his next 50 runs in just 63 balls to bring up his seventh Test century. By the final session of Day 1, Jaiswal had gone past 150 and looks well poised to convert his knock into a third double century in Tests as the match progresses on Day 2.

"Jaiswal is just getting better and better day by day. We've spoken about his hunger and his attitude toward building big innings, not just for himself but for the team. Even in the previous game, he got off to a good start but was dismissed early, so he's certainly made up for that here. Throughout his short career, he has shown that he doesn't waste opportunities like these. Once he's in, he makes it count, and that's wonderful to see," Kumble said on JioHotstar.

Yashasvi Jaiswal fully capitalized on the opportunity in Delhi by notching up his fifth 150-plus score in Test cricket after narrowly missing a chance to pile up a big score in the opening Test in Ahmedabad,. This remarkable tally is the second-highest for any Test player before turning 24. His achievement is only bettered by the Australian legend, Don Bradman, who recorded eight 150-plus scores before his 24th birthday.

Anil Kumble predicts Yashasvi Jaiswal's triple century on Day 2

With Jaiswal still firmly set at the crease and the pitch conditions remaining a batter's paradise, former India's head coach Anil Kumble has publicly urged the young opener to aim higher. Kumble believes Jaiswal should not settle for a double century but instead take his innings a notch further and conclude it with a triple century, a feat that would make him only the third Indian batsman to achieve it.

"He's still out there, and he can go on to score big runs tomorrow. As Sai Sudharsan mentioned, they certainly want to bat as long as possible. Shubman Gill said at the toss that they want to pile on the runs, and that's exactly what the Indian batters have done on Day 1. Jaiswal now has a great opportunity, not just for a double hundred, but maybe even a triple hundred tomorrow," Kumble signed off.

Besides Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan shone bright on Day 1 as he cracked a brilliant 87 to help India reach 318/2 by stumps.
