UP Warriorz left everyone stunned by acquiring back their star all-rounder Deepti Sharma in the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026 auction in New Delhi on November 27. Women's World Cup winner was the focus of a dramatic Right to Match (RTM) standoff.
Deepti Sharma stays back with UP Warriorz
The bidding initially moved at a subdued pace, and Delhi Capitals appeared set to secure the star all-rounder for a low figure of Rs 50 lakh. However, her former franchise UP Warriorz, who earlier released Deepti, utilised the RTM option, triggering an intense bidding contest. Delhi Capitals escalated the price significantly, driving the bid up to a massive Rs 3.2 crore, a figure which UP Warriorz eventually matched to successfully retain the player. Following this acquisition, Deepti now ranks as the second-most expensive Indian cricketer in WPL history, trailing only teammate Smriti Mandhana, who was signed by RCB for Rs 3.4 crore.

Despite being released by UP Warriorz ahead of the mega auction, the spin-bowling all-rounder is a critical asset to the side. She demonstrated her leadership capabilities last season by captaining the franchise in the absence of the injured Australia skipper, Alyssa Healy.
Deepti entered the auction on the highest possible note, having recently been named Player of the Tournament at the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup, where she played a pivotal role in securing India’s title-winning campaign. In her triumphant campaign, Deepti scored 215 runs and claimed 22 wickets, which was highlighted by a match-defining half-century and a five-wicket haul in the final against South Africa. This stellar form builds upon her consistent WPL career across three seasons, where she has compiled 507 runs and secured 27 wickets in 25 matches.
