The upcoming India Basketball League (IBL) has received a significant boost ahead of its official launch, with several former National Basketball Association (NBA) stars backing the ambitious project aimed at transforming basketball in India. The league, which is expected to formally begin in 2027, is already generating excitement due to its vision of building a professional ecosystem for the sport in the country.

Former NBA legends, including Isiah Thomas and DeMarcus Cousins, have voiced strong confidence in India’s basketball potential, citing the country’s growing youth audience and increasing investment in the game.

NBA legends back India Basketball League’s long-term vision

Speaking on the sidelines of the BudX NBA House event in New Delhi, former Detroit Pistons icon Isiah Thomas expressed optimism about basketball’s future in India.

"The future is bright," Thomas said while discussing the rapid growth of basketball culture in the country.

"You have a lot of young people playing right now. Not only are they playing, but you've invested in the game," he added.

Meanwhile, Olympic gold medallist and four-time NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins also praised the potential of Indian basketball but stressed that long-term development would require patience, infrastructure, and consistent grassroots work.

"To start talking about a gold medal, that's a huge jump, but the potential is there," Cousins stated.

He further explained that India would need to gradually strengthen its basketball structure through skill development, training systems, fitness programs, and increased competitive exposure.

"You have to grow the sport within the region first, develop the talent, gain knowledge, gain experience through play, practice, skill training, strength and conditioning," he added.

IBL aims to create sustainable basketball ecosystem in India

The India Basketball League, announced in 2025, is targeting India’s rapidly expanding youth demographic and digital sports audience as it looks to establish a sustainable professional basketball setup.

IBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger believes the country is perfectly positioned for a basketball boom due to changing consumer trends and the growing popularity of global basketball culture among younger audiences.

"The basketball market here is just ready to catch fire," Loeliger said.

He pointed out that India’s Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences are increasingly engaging with basketball-related content, making the timing ideal for launching a professional league.

Loeliger also highlighted that the absence of a consistent professional basketball structure in India for several years created a major opportunity for the IBL to step in and fill that gap.

With backing from global basketball names and increasing attention around the sport in India, the India Basketball League is already building momentum well before its official launch in 2027.
