Jonas Vingegaard claimed the first yellow jersey of the 2026 Tour de France after a dominant opening-stage performance.

The Danish star gained an early edge over defending champion Tadej Pogacar in cycling's biggest rivalry.

Jonas Vingegaard made an emphatic statement on the opening day of the 2026 Tour de France, stunning defending champion Tadej Pogacar to claim the first yellow jersey after Visma-Lease a Bike dominated the opening 19.6km team time trial in Barcelona.

The Danish rider, who already captured the 2026 Giro d'Italia title earlier this season, crossed the line ahead of Pogacar to seize the race lead and signal that he is once again a serious contender for cycling's biggest prize.

Jonas Vingegaard delighted to wear yellow again

Three years after last holding the iconic leader's jersey, Vingegaard admitted the moment carried special significance, especially after the life-threatening injuries he suffered in 2024.

"It feels amazing to have the yellow jersey again. It's been three years and it's one of the most beautiful jerseys in cycling. It's the perfect start for our race."

The two-time Tour de France champion also described this yellow jersey as the most meaningful of his career.

"I would say so. Being back in yellow is important. I will enjoy every moment that I'm wearing it."

Jonas Vingegaard's remarkable comeback comes after his horrific high-speed crash during the 2024 Tour of the Basque Country, where he sustained multiple broken bones and a punctured lung before making a full recovery.

Early advantage over Tadej Pogacar in Tour battle

Vingegaard gained an early psychological edge over long-time rival Tadej Pogacar by finishing 12 seconds ahead of the Slovenian at the uphill finish in Montjuïc.

The opening stage also produced a dramatic twist for Netcompany Ineos, who looked on course to secure the yellow jersey before Kévin Vauquelin suffered a late puncture, allowing Vingegaard's team to capitalize.

Former world time trial champion Filippo Ganna still produced an impressive performance, while French prodigy Paul Seixas and Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel also delivered encouraging opening-stage rides.

With the first yellow jersey secured and momentum firmly on his side, Jonas Vingegaard has laid down an early marker as the battle for the 2026 Tour de France crown begins in earnest.
