The Premier League has often proven itself to be among the most competitive football competitions in the world and some of the best talents choose England as the platform to become the best players in their respective positions. The appeal of the Premier League has improved massively after a slight decline in the 2010s, and with the additions of Erling Haaland (to Manchester City) and Darwin Nunez (to Liverpool) — currently two of football's brightest attacking additions — the prospect of the duo fighting for the Premier League Golden Boot is a mouth-watering one for neutral fans across the board.
Current PL champions Manchester City were quick to complete the signing of Haaland for a cut-throat price of 60 million Euros after the Citizens activated the release clause in his Dortmund contract. In response, Liverpool, who put on a strong fight for the title and also missed out on the Champions League title after losing to Real Madrid, brought in another talent in the form of Darwin Nunez, for a price of 75 million euros.
Here, we look at both of these deals separately and see which of the two will be a better signing for their respective clubs:
HAALAND TO CITY: Pep's solution for a lack of European trophies?
The Norwegian signed for the Blue side of Manchester on a deal worth five years. This ended Pep Guardiola's search for a number 9 forward, something the club seemingly lacked. The link-up between Haaland and Kevin de Bryune is the most awaited duo ahead of the new season. But, did Man City really need a poacher like Haaland?
Looking back at City's last campaign, Pep's men clinched the Premier League title without a proper number 9. In the 2021/22 season, City scored 99 goals, averaging two per match, and all this, without a stable attacker. Since Aguero left the club, there has not been a traditional striker at the club, barring Gabriel Jesus. But the Brazilian was overshadowed by the legacy of his Argentinean counterpart and could not adequately fill the void.
But with the side now desperately in need of a Champions League trophy to cement their place as a legacy club, the striker position cannot be left out for too long. Kevin de Bryune was one who took on a more attacking role in the team. Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, and Phil Foden also tried to fill the void.
Haaland's physicality, speed, and ability both on and off the ball make him a player City desperately need against European competition.
NUNEZ TO LIVERPOOL: The Red's new Uruguayan goal merchant?
The Uruguayan, and former Benfica player, signed for Liverpool for a club-record fee of 85 million pounds and on a six-year contract. This transfer raises many eyebrows, with the club already having Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota in their ranks in a position where Jurgen Klopp might look to fit this signing. With Sadio Mane leaving the club and signing for giants Bayern Munich, the position will fall on Luis Diaz is already in the squad to take up that place.
This means Liverpool has three players to play in the number 9 positions.
Jurgen Klopp is looking to strengthen his attacking options, but we hope this does not backfire. He now has three strikers — Nunez, Jota, and Firmino. Meanwhile, Nunez is being compared to a former Liverpool player who was also from Uruguay and was a striker as well — Luis Saurez.
Liverpool finished 2nd just a point behind City in the title race. They lost to Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League as well in 2022. The Merseyside, managed a brace in the domestic run as they won FA CUP and Carabao Cup.
Nunez will definitely, boost up Liverpool's attacking strength.
