Struggling Premier League outfit Chelsea have announced that their stand defender Thiago Silva picked up a ligament injury in his knee during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, February 26.

The club released a statement on Monday and confirmed that Silva sustained a knee injury against the Spurs and is currently undergoing tests and scans to assess the extent of the injury.

"Having sustained a knee injury during the first half of Sunday's match against Tottenham Hotspur, Thiago underwent further assessment and a scan on his return to the training centre on Monday.

"Scan results from those assessments have confirmed damage to Thiago's knee ligaments and he will now work closely with the club's medical department during his rehabilitation to return to action as soon as possible," read the statement from Chelsea.

The Brazilian stalwart has been one of Chelsea's best performers in what has been a disastrous season for the Blues. He was signed from Paris Saint Germain in 2020, winning the UEFA Champions League in his first season with the club. Silva has signed a one-year contract extension in 2022, which will keep him at Chelsea until the summer of 2024.

The 38-year-old will not be part of the squad for their crucial Champions League Round of 16-second leg clash against Borussia Dortmund, having lost the first leg 1-0 against the Bundesliga side.

Among their many defensive options, the side can turn to the likes of Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly and Trevoh Chalobah for a defensive presence. Meanwhile, January signing Benoit Badiashile is ineligible to feature in the Champions League after not being registered by Chelsea but will hope to play regularly in the Premier League.

It has been a poor return from the FIFA World Cup for Chelsea, putting pressure on Graham Potter, who joined them midway through the season from Brighton and Hove Albion. The side are in a bad shape this season, placed 10th in the league standings and having picked up just 31 points from their opening 24 matches in the league.
