Jude Bellingham backpedals after viral Lionel Messi clash in FIFA World Cup semi-final

England midfielder Jude Bellingham has played down his heated on-field confrontation with Lionel Messi during the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final, insisting the viral exchange was nothing more than a discussion over a refereeing decision. The incident quickly spread across social media after cameras caught Messi staring down the England star before dismissively nodding at the end of the exchange.

The clash came during an intense first half filled with physical challenges as Argentina eventually produced another late comeback to defeat England 2-1 and book their place in the World Cup final.

Bellingham explains what happened during confrontation with Messi

Addressing the incident after the match, Bellingham dismissed suggestions of any personal animosity and revealed the pair were simply debating an earlier foul that had gone uncalled.

"[We were] discussing a foul, actually. But it was nothing bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal. But no, it was nothing really."

The England midfielder explained that he believed he had been fouled in the build-up to the incident before Messi reminded him of a challenge he had received moments earlier. Jude Bellingham responded by telling the Argentine captain that he was strong enough to absorb such contact, stressing that the conversation never crossed the line despite how it appeared on television.

While the confrontation became one of the biggest talking points of the evening, it was Argentina's dramatic comeback that ultimately decided the contest.

England looked set to reach the World Cup final after Anthony Gordon handed the Three Lions a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute. However, the defending champions struck back in the closing stages, with Enzo Fernandez levelling the scores in the 85th minute from a Lionel Messi assist before substitute Lautaro Martinez headed home Messi's cross in stoppage time to seal a stunning 2-1 victory.

Despite the painful defeat, Jude Bellingham admitted it was still a special occasion to share the pitch with the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"It's privilege to play against [Messi]. There was nothing against him... it's a privilege to go against him."
