Spain finished top with seven points from three matches and a +5 goal difference. Cape Verde claimed second spot with three points and a level goal difference, edging out more fancied opponents and two-time World Cup winners Uruguay out of the tournament at group stage in a shocking upset. 

In addition to Uruguay, Saudi Arabia has also been eliminated as both ended on two points. The result marks Cape Verde’s first-ever appearance at the World Cup and their first progression beyond the group stage, sparking widespread celebrations for the African side of roughly 600,000 inhabitants.
