ATK Mohun Bagan were at their best in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 final after they came back to beat Bengaluru FC via penalties in Goa on Saturday, March 18. Goals from the spot by Dimitrios Petratos in either half negated Sunil Chhetri and Roy Krishna's goals to force extra time and win the match, and the trophy, on penalties.
It was the first trophy for ATK Mohun Bagan since the merger between ATK FC and Mohun Bagan as their owner Sanjeev Goenka announced after the match that the team will now be called Mohun Bagan Super Giants in order to appease the fans' cry to remove the prefix ATK from the team's name.
After the match, the team landed on Sunday morning to the roar of jubilant fans as the team ended three years of despair in the fight for the trophy. The club shared a video of the same.
As the team went on their much-awaited tour with the trophy, Sports Tak received exclusive footage of the parade, complete with fans celebrating what was a momentous occasion.
The club shared the brilliant celebrations from the perspective of the players, who were equally thrilled to finally return to the city with the coveted trophy — and a new name.
The match was not without controversy however, with Bengaluru FC owner Parth Jindal completely furious at the referee's decision to award the second penalty. It was a telling moment as Petratos scored the following penalty to equalise the match in the 85th minute and take it into extra time.
