Jose Mourinho has finally revealed the reason behind why Real Madrid didn't go for Rodri after months of transfer speculation linked with the 15-time UEFA Champions League winners. The former Manchester City star recently signed for the rivals, FC Barcelona, in a stunning move.

In his first major interview since taking charge at the Bernabéu, the Portuguese coach told Spanish programme El Chiringuito that the club made Rodri a strong offer and that he personally spoke with the Spain international twice. He said:
“Rodri had doubts, he hesitated… and Rodri’s doubts created doubts for me.”
Mourinho added:
“He’s an extraordinary player and was very respectful with us, but Real Madrid is of a dimension that cannot have players who think twice. You contact them and the player asks: ‘When do I have to go?’”
Rodri ultimately joined Hansi Flick’s side instead. Mourinho wished the World Cup standout well “not too well, obviously” while insisting he does not miss the midfielder. “We have solutions, we have quality,” he added, declaring himself satisfied with the current squad.
The comments mark an early statement of intent from Mourinho in his second spell at Real Madrid, underlining the club’s expectation of total commitment from any prospective signing. Meanwhile, Rodri had earlier stated that he respects the offer from the Spanish side before ultimately going for the rivals instead.
