Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni sends clear warning to players amid FIFA World Cup squad selection
Speaking after a tense 2-1 friendly win over Mauritania at La Bombonera, Scaloni highlighted an overcrowded preliminary list and the need for cuts. He said:
“I think we have too many in the 26-man list and we’ll have to start cutting based on performances”.
The 47-year-old added:
“If the performance isn’t adequate, I’ll take action. The other day’s match may have been a warning”.
The narrow victory, featuring goals from Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Paz, drew sharp self-criticism from Scaloni, who admitted the team “did not play a good game” and fell below its usual standards despite the result.
The match served as a reality check during the March international window, offering opportunities for fringe players and youngsters to stake their claims while testing the depth of the defending champions.
With the World Cup finals approaching in North America, Scaloni’s comments underscore a merit-based approach that has defined his tenure, including the successful 2022 Qatar campaign and the 2024 Copa America title. Meanwhile, the team will next face Zambia, with the coach confirming that Messi will start.
