Diego Simeone had never won a single match at Camp Nou until Wednesday night, when he etched his name into football history by securing his first-ever win at the FC Barcelona home stadium. Atletico Madrid stunned Hansi Flick’s side 2-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
Atletico’s Simeone creates history with 2-0 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou
The Argentine boss, who has led Atletico since 2011, had endured 18 previous visits to the iconic stadium without a win, but his side’s stunning performance finally broke Barcelona’s 25-game unbeaten home streak against them dating back to 2006. He had a record of seven draws and 11 defeats going into Wednesday's game.
Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sørloth scored for the visitors, who capitalized on a red card to the hosts. The match turned decisively in Simeone’s favor in the second half when Barcelona was reduced to 10 men.
Alvarez opened the scoring with a clinical finish, and Sørloth doubled the lead later, exposing defensive gaps in a depleted Barcelona side. Atletico’s stunning defensive structure and swift counter-attacks proved decisive against the Spanish giants that dominated possession but struggled to create clear chances after the dismissal.
