Gianni Infantino continues to be in the headlines for the wrong reasons. New controversy has emerged regrading him, as the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has confirmed it will not support Infantino’s campaign for another term as FIFA president in the March 2027 election.

The federation has mentioned two important reasons for its opposition, one of which is the Balogun case that happened during the recently concluded World Cup. In a statement released on Monday, the RBFA cited two main issues where it believes FIFA has shown insufficient transparency and governance.

The first is the controversial decision during the 2026 World Cup to suspend U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match red-card ban, allowing him to play against Belgium in the round of 16.
The RBFA, which was directly involved, said it has repeatedly requested clear justifications for the decision and details on how similar cases would be handled in the future, but has yet to receive satisfactory answers. It has asked for the matter to be placed on the agenda of the next FIFA Council meeting on October 15.
The second concern relates to the now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise project, under which FIFA planned to create a subsidiary and sell stakes in its competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors. The RBFA said important decisions and assessments in the process lacked adequate justification.
The Belgian federation’s stance aligns with UEFA, which has called for Infantino’s resignation over the failed commercial plan. FIFA confirmed over the weekend that Infantino intends to seek re-election. Meanwhile, Belgium defeated the United States 4-1 in the World Cup match in question.
