Real Madrid have faced a huge blow ahead of the Super Copa de Espana final against Barcelona, as Ferland Mendy has picked up an injury and ruled out of Sunday's clash.
Big clash for Real Madrid
Xabi Alonso's men secured their place in the final of the Spanish football tournament after defeating derby rivals Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Elsewhere, Barcelona clinched a 5-0 win over Athletic Bilbao to book a game against their Clasico rival.
Curious injury case of Ferland Mendy
Mendy came in as a substitute against Los Rojiblancos, coming on for Raul Ascencio in the 69th minute of the game. The French player has had his game time reduced because of injuries and looked to set the appearance in tonight's crunch game after playing in the semis.
But in a surprising turn of events, Mendy will not be available for selection when Real Madrid lock horns with Barcelona in the SuperCopa de Espana final, with Cope reporting that he missed Los Blancos' final training session in Jeddah.
Kylian Mbappe comes back for Real Madrid
Despite the defensive loss, Real Madrid can hope for some positivity from the return of Kylian Mbappe, who trained with the rest of the squad ahead of the final. Mbappe was not included in the matchday squad that faced Atletico Madrid because of a left knee sprain.
Tonight's clash marks the second time Real Madrid have faced each other this season. The first encounter was a league clash at the Santiago Bernabeu in October, with Alonso's team defeating their classico rivals in a 2-1 win.
