Dani Carvajal had just returned from a long injury break and the Real Madrid captain is now sidelined again. The 33-year-old has been diagnosed with a loose joint in his right knee and is set to undergo surgery. The Spanish star faced discomfort after Real Madrid beat arch-rivals FC Barcelona at the first El Clasico of the season which the Whites won 2-1.
Dani Carvajal injury update: When will Real Madrid star return?
Carvajal came on as a substitute which was his first match since the player suffered a calf injury in the 5–2 loss to Atletico Madrid in late September. The six-time Champions League winner is now set for another spell on the sidelines. According to a report by the club, he has been ruled out for at least six weeks which means his possible return can be expected in January 2026.
Real Madrid released an official statement on Monday which read:
“Following tests carried out on our captain, Dani Carvajal, by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a loose joint in his right knee.”
The 15-time UCL winners also stated that the Spain international “will undergo arthroscopy.”

Carvajal, who also captains the Spanish football national team, endured a series of injury setbacks in recent seasons. He had sustained a similar knee injury in October 2024, following which the player had to be ruled out for the remainder of the season when he tore two ligaments and a tendon.
This has left head coach Xabi Alonso in huge concern as summer signing Trent Alexander-Arnold is also not fully fit. Fede Valverde is the only option at the right-back position for the Los Blancos manager.
